Ministry is provided by the Church of Scotland. In all other respects, we are self supporting through congregational giving and the lease of premises to outside organisations, like the nursery school, which meets every morning in our hall.

“The Lord loves a cheerful giver”
In a church, as in any family, it is important to do some financial planning. The church’s financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March. This is the time of year that the Kirk Session considers draft budgets for approval. Part of this process includes a review of actual expenditure against budget for the year.

This is also a good time for each of us to review our financial giving by asking ourselves - How many rupees do I put in to the collection plate on a Sunday? What amount am I thinking of giving in 2009? How does my giving relate to my income? Am I giving one-tenth of all my resources, income, gifts, time and talents to the Lord?

In this process, it might be helpful for you to know the costs of items of expenditure when you plan your giving in 2009. For example:
Rs. 1,000 pays for the after-church refreshments for one Sunday.
Rs 1,500 pays for the food for the Netherlee Cottage family for one day.
Rs 2,000 pays for the electricity to run the fans, lights, public address and organ during a Sunday morning service.
Rs 5,000 pays for Sunday school and Youth Group materials for a month.
Rs 6,000 pays for refreshments taken to Ward 19, Mulleriyawa hospital on the monthly visit.
Rs.50,000 pays the monthly salaries for the teacher and helpers at each of the post-tsunami pre-schools in Mawella or Hikkaduwa.
Rs.60,000 pays to build one toilet in the villages where our “Neighbours in Need community development work is carried out.
Rs.150,000 buys a multimedia projector to be used by the Youth group.
Rs.300,000 was needed to build a ramp to provide disabled access to the church.
Rs.5,000,000 is needed to pay for essential repairs to the church roof.
Rs.50,000,000 is needed to build a new church hall.

You may wish to select one or several of these to be the expense to which you wish to make a contribution. For example, you may wish to remember a loved one who has passed away by giving rupees to purchase food for Netherlee or Mulleriyawa specifically for the day of that loved one’s birthday.
